Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm: A Small Pink Slice of Heaven- Review

I am a huge proponent of moisturizing lip balms, but I really have a penchant for those that are out of the realm of the ordinary. As a result, I have been coveting Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm from afar until just recently. I can say, without hesitation, that it was well worth the wait.  This luxe little gem fittingly lives up to the name Olio Lusso-- as it is indeed luxurious.
Unfolding the package feels a bit like opening up an origami swan to learn the secrets of its creation. Once open, you are greeted my a chic clear lucite compact, which is at once minimal and unmistakably elegant.  Indeed, it is such an alluring and attractive lip balm that you will surely delight in just seeing it- let alone using it.
Of course all of this would be for naught, were the contents of this beauty merely average in quality- which is hardly the case.
According to Rodin, "All-natural RODIN Lip Balm does for your lips what RODIN Olio Lusso Face Oil does for your complexion—it smoothes and softens, leaving a protective sheen on the lips that feels as good as it looks. Packed into this delightfully sheer and moisturizing lip pomade are a highly emollient, deliciously rich and kissable blend of jasmine, orange flower oil, shea butter, beeswax, and castor seed oil. This blush-toned luxury lip balm is beautifully packaged in a chic, square art modern-style lucite compact, perfect for carrying in your pocket or purse. Apply at frequent intervals, whenever lips start to feel dry. May be worn under or over lipstick, for extra emolliency."
I find this luxury lip balm to be highly emollient and delightfully moisturizing. My lips are left soft, smooth and supple. It has the faint scent of orange flower oil and jasmine, which I find intoxicating, but that does fade rather quickly. It also imparts the lips with a very sexy light pink hue that adds to the allure of this balm. The balm is quite dense and somewhat hard in the compact, but once it melts into your lips it is pure unmitigated heaven! The only thing that might be off-putting is the scent to those who are not fond of of jasmine and orange, but as previously noted the scent does fade rather quickly. For the scores of people who prefer lip balms in tubes for sanitary reasons: it is worth washing your hands or using a hand sanitizer prior to use- because the benefits of this balm are worth the extra trouble!

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (castor) Seed Oil, Cera Alba (beeswax), Butyrospermum Parkii (shea Butter) Oil, Jasminum Offcinale (jasmine) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Flower Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Argania Spinosa (argan) Kernel Oil, Mica, Ci 77891 (titanium Dioxide), Ci 75470, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Linalool, Farnesol, Geraniol, Citral.

Overall assessment: What can I say, this is one of those products that just makes me happy in every way. I love the design of the packaging, the way that the balm feels, the way that it looks on my lips, and most importantly how well it moisturizes and protects my lips. This might well become one of my Holy Grail lip products. I am very happy with my purchase!

  1. Well this has been on my Beauty Wish List for a number of months now...very happy to hear it's worth the splurge!! I'm not against pots - I just hate it when I unscrew them open & then have to balance the lid & container in one hand while trying to apply with the other...not to mention if I'm trying to hold a compact mirror or purse too!!! So I really like that this has a flip up lid on a mod little case :-) have you by any chance tried the Rodin hand cream yet?

    1. Hi Gummy! I hope that you had a lovely weekend!! Yup, it was on my beauty wish list for a while as well! I agree-- unscrewing pot lids is a pain-- especially when the lid falls on the floor! ;( I love this compact-- it has the perfect amount of heft, it feels good in the hand, and it's got that modern luxe feel and appearance. Of course, more importantly the balm itself is in my opinion exquisite! The whole line really just resonates with me, and I am hopelessly intrigued by Linda Rodin herself! I'm kind of in love with her products!! I tried the hand cream at Barneys two times, and forgot to ask for a sample. I really like it. Of course, it is quite expensive-- but i imagine that at some point I will cave and get it. ;)

  2. You find such interesting things. I guess I'm better off not living near Barney's though.

    1. The Apothecary section of Barneys is a magical place, and I routinely find amazing things there! It's definitely better for your wallet that you don't live close to Barneys, and definitely worse for mine that it is a 10 minute drive from my house!!

  3. Hello Lola!

Thank you for your thorough review! I have talked myself into and out of getting this balm at least seven times ; ) Your post just might have talked me into it again! Do you feel like it yields any color at all?

    Take care...

    1. Hello, my dearest friend!! I have been thinking about you a lot lately!! We need to catch up soon!!<3

I did the same thing as you did-- I kept talking myself out of this, but just kept revisiting it until I finally caved!! It is a lovely lip balm, but it ultimately imparts very little color. I would say that it enhances natural lip color, rather than depositing pink pigment. It does have a lovely moderate shine. If you are looking for something that falls into your beloved pinky/peachy/nude hue realm- it will fall short. However, if you are looking for a lovely luxury balm- then I think that you will really like this! It is also lanolin free-- so it won't bother your lips. That said, if the scent/flavor of jasmine and orange flower oil bothers you or causes your lips any trouble- that is an entirely different issue to consider. I know that some people have complained about that aspect of this balm, but I myself find it quite pleasant! xoxox

  4. ooooh you got it!!! :D I have been so curious about this one for quite some time--I am a lip balm junkie and while I haven't taken the plunge (because when I find a balm I like, I use it OFTEN--whether I need it or no. So splurging on a balm hasn't won out over practicality...yet), I think this post may just push me over the edge. It sounds absolutely delightful!

    1. I did-- I finally caved, Becca!! I had been stalking this for so long. I am also a lip balm junkie, and I generally go for the less expensive ones as well, but finally decided to splurge! I LOVE IT!!!!! It really is delightful. In fact, I'm delighted by Rodin products in general!! <3

  5. Is it still your HG or has something surpassed it?

    1. I definitely love it as much today as I did when I wrote this review! This is an amazing lip balm. As far as luxury balms go, I also love By Terry Baume de Rose and NUXE Balm. I'm also a huge fan of the Osmia Organics Lip Balm as well.

  6. Hmmm... How much does the Nuxe smell like honey? (I detest honey; weird, I know!) For the Osmia, do you mean the stick or the one you reviewed? When I googled the name you listed, it brought up a stick. But it also brought up a review of a different product in the pot, much like the NUXE. The Rodin is a least a third more than the NUXE and Osmia. Worth it? I kind of like the idea of a pink tint because it's less likely to disappear from my bathroom into one of my sons' pockets..... (But not at 1/3 more if it's really not worth it.) (This is the reason I finally stopped purchasing black umbrellas and started buying pink, gold or silver.... Mean Mom, yes I know...) ;-) http://osmiaorganics.com/collections/lip-repair

    1. It definitely doesn't smell too much like honey, but you should probably smell it at Space NK to see if you like the smell. The Osmia Organics lip balm that I love is the Honey-Myrrh Lip Repair in the little glass pot. The Rodin Olio Lusso is delightful, and it's worth it to me. The pink tint is very slight, but I find it ever so flattering. Whether it is worth it to you depends on whether you fall in love with the Rodin balm. They should have it at your local Barneys to check out. OMG LOL! I love that you started buying pink umbrellas so that your sons don't take them!
